EU: Member States failing legal obligation to report on arms transfers

Saferworld has launched a new database and report comparing EU Member States’ national reporting on arms transfers. All EU member States are legally obliged to publish national reports on arms transfers under the EU Common Position. The report found that so far only 18 out of 27 EU Member States have fulfilled this obligation. It concludes that even among the national reports that were published many failed to meet a set of criteria for good reporting practices. Roy Isbister said “Reporting on arms transfers needs to be more than just a box-ticking exercise; it needs to let the public see and understand the decisions their government is taking.
